45+ Championship
| |||
The IABL closed its’ 20th season on a chilly, breezy night with the Reds and Giants squaring off in the 45+ Championship.
On paper, the #2 seed Reds, led by veteran skipper Mike Brunette looked to be the favorite after going 3-0 against the Giants in the regular season. But, having just knocked off the #1 seed Braves, rookie manager Michael Mackenzie-Veal and his #5 seed Giants proved that you don’t play the game on paper
The Giants started the game with the first two batters Tim Baer and Jim Ciasto reaching on base hits. The normally stingy Reds pitching and defense had allowed the fewest runs in the league but faltered and allowed the Giants to push across two unearned runs on a passed ball and a costly two out error. The Reds answered in the bottom of the inning when Mike Brunette scored on an RBI fielders’ choice from Scott Leverenz.
Starting pitchers Robert Allen for the Giants and Larry Abed for the Reds then settled in for what was shaping up to be a nail biter…until the 6th inning. After allowing another unearned run in the 4th when Mackenzie-Veal doubled and scored on an error the Reds went to the stalwart arm of Ron Martin who cruised through the fifth…but then ran into a buzz saw in the sixth.
Loading the bases with none out in the top of the sixth, the Giants proceeded to send 13 batters to the plate scoring 9 runs to put the game out of reach. 20 year IABL veterans Ciasto and Roger Williams providing big hits in the inning.
Credit the Reds for not throwing in the towel when faced with a 12-1 deficit, they tried to get back in it in the bottom of the inning. The Giants should have been out of the inning when their ace Doug Harrison struck out the side, but the inning was extended when Jeff Swiatek reached on a missed third strike, stole second and scored on a single by Leverenz. Martin was hit by a pitch and then Mark Laesch delivered a big Double, bringing in both runners. The Reds tried to mount a two out rally in the bottom of the 9th scoring two more runs, but with runners at second and third Harrison bore down and got the final out and completed the Giants hot streak. For the fourth game in a row, the Giants scored in double digits and took their first 45+ Championship by a score of 12-6. | |||
