28+ Championship
|
|
December 1st 2010 - It was a game that seemed like at any time one of the teams would break it wide open. Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities, but the Giants stranded 9 runners and the Dodgers marooned 15. The Dodgers would score a run on a Sac Fly and hang on to beat the Giants 1-0 and capture their first 28+ Championship. The #1 Seed Giants (16-2) made their way to the final game by defeating the # 8 Seed Titans 6-2 in the first round, and then outlasted the tenacious White Sox 13-9 in the semi final. The #2 Seed Dodgers (15-3) pounded out 24 hits to beat the #7 Seed Expos 15-3 in the opener, and then squeezed past the #3 Seed Pirates in a 2-1 nailbiter. For the title game, the Giants went to 2009 Cy Young winner Jeff Johnson, and the Dodgers gave the ball to former Indianapolis Indian Travis Buckley. Both starters got off to a solid beginning by retiring the first three batters they faced. The second inning set the tone for the rest of the game. In the top, the Dodgers threatened when Brad Sparks led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Buckley bringing up big John Hensley with the first scoring opportunity of the game. The Giant defense came through with a big 6-4-3 double play and then JJ got Jeryn Crouch to look at strike three to end the threat. In the bottom of the inning the Giants started strong with a leadoff single by Danny Alberts followed by a booming double off the bat of Andrew Cornell. With runners at second and third and no out the Giants were looking for a big inning, but Buckley had other ideas. Using all his tools, he induced a popup to first, and then two consecutive ground balls to third to get out of the jam without a scratch. Clearly, the story of this game was pitching and defense. Both teams put runners on base time after time, only to be stifled by solid defense and pitchers that stepped up and made big pitches when they absolutely needed to. The only run of the game wasn’t scored until the top of the seventh. With one out, Tony Christofaro ripped a double and advanced to third on a single by Steve Pry bringing the number 10 hitter to the plate. Skipper Adam Adkins came through for his team, lifting a fly ball to left deep enough to score Christofaro. The Dodgers tried to break it open by loading the bases on a single and walk, but this time it was JJ who came up with a big pitch to get an easy fly ball and get out of the inning. It looked like the Giants would come right back in the bottom of the seventh when Mike Lexa led off with a line drive single. The Dodgers went to the bullpen and Alberts greeted reliever Brad Sparks with another single. Cornell came up to sacrifice the runners but was unable to get the bunt down and wound up a strikeout victim. Sparks got ahead of Joe Pahnke and snuck a curveball past him for another K and then after a walk to one Manship brother, he induced a ground ball from the other one for the third out. The Giants threatened again in the 8th and 9th. In the 8th, with runners at second and third with one out Sparks got two ground balls to end the inning. In the top of the 9th the Dodgers squandered an opportunity for an insurance run. Steve Pry led off with a triple but was caught in a pickle when third baseman Dan Veselsky handled a one hopper and caught Pry in no mans land. In the bottom of the 9th the Giants also squandered their last opportunity to score. Alberts led off with his third hit of the game. Rather than use a sacrifice the Giants opted to send pinch runner Mike Ciasto who was promptly cut down by the throw from Catcher Mike Stewart. A ground ball to second followed by a strikeout put the finishing touches on this gem of a game for the Dodger pitching staff. For the second year in a row the number 1 and 2 seeds met in the final, and for the second year in a row the number 2 seed claimed victory by one run. Both teams are to be congratulated for their excellent seasons and for their outstanding efforts in this game. But to the winner go the spoils and special congratulations go to manager Adam Adkins for leading his team to their first championship. It takes an outstanding effort to score a total of 3 runs in the semi final and championship games against the defending champion Pirates and the hard hitting Giants and make it stand up for two big wins. |
