18+ All Star Game

MVP Kurt Barbender with 18+ Director Dan Taylor
July 9th 2009 -

It was the National Division prevailing over the American division in the 18+ All Star game Wednesday night 6-4.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Tom “The Bomb” Gandolph drove 5 shots out of spacious Decatur Central to win the Home Run Derby yet again.  Maybe we’ll just start calling it the Gandolph Award.

We wish to extend a big thank you to Coach Phil Webster at Decatur Central for being a terrific host and long time supporter of the IABL.

The Nationals started the scoring in the top of the second with the Hurricanes Danny Gillin driving a double in the left center field gap and then coming across on a single by Kurt Brabender of the Dodgers.  American starter Eric Teall of the Arrows then bore down and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

The Americans came right back in the bottom of the second, with the first 3 batters reaching on hits, Tanner Freeman of the Beavers struck out the next batter and then gave up an RBI single to the Arrows Jim Wegener, followed by an RBI fielders’ choice by another Arrow, Jason Hutchison who drove in teammate Ryne Foster.

The Nationals came right back in the top of the 3rd, with the Beavers’ Bryston Bangel reaching on a 2 out bunt single, stealing second and then coming home on Dodger Dan Taylors’ single.  Kurt Brabender then tied it up in the 4th with a solo Home Run to left.

The Arrows Ryan Nicholson wound up being the tough luck losing pitcher as the Nationals pushed across 2 unearned runs in the top of the 5th, making the Cubs Micah Bowers the winning pitcher.

The American squad made it a 1 run game in the 6th when they came up with an unearned run of their own with veteran Brave Matt Matheis driving in Ryan Hooten of the Astros who had reached on an error.

The Nationals added an insurance run in the 8th when Hurricanes skipper Phil Belcher reached on a walk, and then advanced to second on a single by the Orioles Jason Twomey.  Bryston Bangel moved up the runners with a sac bunt and Canes SS Jude Burger came through with a Sac fly to score Belcher.  Kenny Hughes, another Hurricane, pitched a scoreless 9th to pick up the save.

Going 2 for 3 with a Home Run, 2 RBI and 2 stolen bases, the Dodgers Kurt Brabender was named game MVP.
